There are many different types of paving, blacktop being one of the most common. Blacktop is a mixture of stone, sand, and liquid asphalt called bitumen with the color arising from the addition of carbon black, a fine carbon powder that increases durability.

Blacktop is more porous and can develop cracks and potholes depending on certain environmental factors however is more cost-effective than asphalt for residential applications. 

Hot mix asphalt is the most common type of asphalt used. It is suitable for use on major roads, airport runways, and helipads as the liquid petroleum creates a strong and durable paving material.

Asphalt is less porous than blacktop and requires a layer of sealant to prevent water damage.
